Split vs Hvar vs Dubrovnik: where to base your party-gear rental
Picking a base for a Croatian group week? Gear delivery is €100 in Split, €360 to Hvar with the ferry, €520 to Dubrovnik. Here's what each place is actually good for — and when the delivery premium is worth paying anyway.
Most people book the villa first and think about music later. That’s backwards by one step: where you base the group changes what gear costs you, how fast it can get there, and what you can fix if something goes wrong on the night.
We’re based in Split, so this comparison has an obvious bias and we’re going to state it up front rather than hide it. Split is cheapest for gear because our depot is there, not because Split is the better holiday. If your group wants Hvar, go to Hvar. Below is what each base actually costs and what it’s actually good for.
The number nobody quotes you until it’s too late
Rental rates are identical in all three places. A Bose S1 Pro+ is €85/day in Split and €85/day in Cavtat. What changes is the one-off doorstep delivery fee, which is a van, a driver, and — on Hvar — a ferry:

That’s one fee for the whole rental, not per day. On a seven-night booking the Dubrovnik premium over Split works out at about €60 a night on top; on a two-night booking it’s €210 a night, which is why we tell people short Dubrovnik rentals rarely make sense — and why free pickup from our Split base is worth a real look down there.
Split — the default, and the only base with a safety net
Split is the biggest yacht-charter base in Croatia, it has the airport most groups fly into, and it’s where our stock physically sits.
What that buys you:
- Same-day delivery is genuinely possible if you reserve before 11:00 and we have a free van. Nowhere else on this list can do that.
- Free pickup from the depot if anyone in the group has a car. That’s €100 back in the kitty.
- The deepest stock. Split is where we hold the most inventory, so it’s the easiest zone to go off-package and build your own rig from the DJ equipment rental range or the PA and audio system range.
- Trogir (+€40) and Brač (+€60 for the ferry) ride on the same run, so a villa in Trogir or a Bol day is barely more expensive than a villa in Žnjan.
Who should base here: yacht charters (the Yacht Sundowner at €220/day was built for boats leaving the ACI marina), groups who booked late, groups who want a big rig for the money, and anyone nervous about logistics. Our Split villa party gear guide breaks the kit down by group size.
Who shouldn’t: if what your group wants is an island week. Split is a working city — apartments, noise rules, neighbours. Don’t base here to save €260 and then spend the week wishing you were somewhere else.
Hvar — two islands wearing one name
Hvar is the most misunderstood choice on this list because “Hvar” means two different holidays:
- Hvar Town — the marina, Carpe Diem, Hula Hula, the late nights. Your party mostly happens outside the villa, so the gear you rent is for daytime and pre-drinks, not for the main event.
- Stari Grad, Jelsa, Vrboska — boutique stone villas, terraces, pools, dinner parties. The gear is the event here. Villa Sundowner at €165/day is the right call for most of these, and Birthday with the Lights at €285/day for the one milestone night.
The €360 delivery covers all four towns and includes the Split–Stari Grad car ferry both ways — we don’t add it at the door. The catch is timing: we need at least 48 hours to lock a peak-season ferry slot, and the crossing means we can’t rescue you with a same-afternoon swap if a cable goes missing. Pack the handover check seriously.
When Hvar is worth the €260 premium over Split. The delivery gap is now a real line on the budget, not a rounding error. If your group has already decided it wants Hvar nightlife, or has booked a stone villa above Jelsa, paying €260 more to have the gear meet you at the gate is a genuine choice — weigh it against sending someone to our Split depot, which is free. Dubrovnik — the expensive one, and sometimes still right
Dubrovnik is ~3.5 hours from Split via the Pelješac bridge, which means a round trip is a full driver day. Hence €520.
It earns that when the trip is built around what only Dubrovnik has: the Old Town, Cavtat, and the Konavle valley — where the villa weeks tend to be older, longer, multi-generational, and quieter. “Music in the evening” more than “rave in the pool.” Dubrovnik and Cavtat also run one of Europe’s busiest destination-wedding seasons; a ceremony needs completely different kit from a party, and wedding sound equipment rental covers that split.
Base here if you’re staying a week or more, the group is 25+ and older, or the wedding/venue is already booked. Don’t base here for a two-night blowout — you’d be paying €520 to move a €165/day package, and the same money in Split buys you the 4× LED PAR uplight set at €95/day plus a Sennheiser EW-D wireless handheld at €75/day for the speeches. July and August also add roughly an hour to delivery because of cruise-ship traffic. May, June, September and October are the sane months here.
What doesn’t change wherever you base
- We’re dry hire. No DJ, no engineer, no stage build, no staffing. Gear arrives cabled and tested, we show whoever’s responsible how to run it, and we come back for it. That’s the same in all three zones.
- Rental rates are flat coast-wide. A Pioneer DDJ-FLX4 is €65/day everywhere. A JBL PartyBox 710 is €110/day everywhere. An LD Systems Maui 5 GO column is €90/day everywhere.
- Free pickup from Split is always an option in every zone, if someone is driving the coast anyway.
- Payment, the refundable deposit and the ten-minute handover are one document for every zone.
- Croatian quiet hours are 23:00–07:00 nationally. Split, Hvar and Dubrovnik villas all sit inside it. Plan the peak for 21:00–22:30 anywhere on this coast.
The short version
Base in Split if you’re flying in late, chartering a boat, booking last-minute, or want the most gear per euro. Base on Hvar if the group wants island nightlife or a boutique villa week — and just pay the €360. Base in Dubrovnik if you’re there a week and the trip is about Dubrovnik.
